Is Spiderman the only big cash cow Sony currently have for their movie division? They must be kicking themselves that they lost James Bond to another studio as well.
Anyway, the rumor is that Sony completely lost faith in this and cut the advertising budget in half, which is why you barely saw any advertising at all.
But I can see it doing well on the streaming market (which is what it probably should have been on in the first place instead of a cinema release - a lot of folks prefer to watch a movie at home nowadays cos it's a lot cheaper with today's prices).
The Cameron Diaz films actually made some good bank if you look it up. So the whole argument Banks is trying to push about wahmen is rubbish.

They won’t though. Not until it nearly bankrupts Hollywood, which will take another ten years of this shit.
Sony doesn't have an axe to grind or bankroll to compete with Disney buying out theaters. And in the end they obviously didn't give enough of a shit about this if they cut the funding in half.
Remember when all of those Hunger Games movies flopped? Elizabeth Banks was in those films, that must've faded from memory.
Remember the box office bomb Underworld? And Mad Max Fury Road which nobody at all saw? And the entire Resident Evil series? And the first two Charlie's Angels films which weren't Shakespeare but and least were fun in a braindead way. Such a string of female led action movie commercial failures.
Oh, and did anyone see Wonder Woman? That film cratered!!! No men at all went to see Wonder Woman in theaters. There will never be a sequel to that. It's a shame Gal Gadot faded into obscurity never to be seen from again.
Effie was an idiot in Hunger Games. Good casting.

They gave this movie to Banks because the Pitch Perfect movies made money.
From what I heard about this movie, there aren’t many action scenes, and the ones it has aren’t anything special compared to the McG films. Plus, casting actors that are essentially no-names isn’t going to help get people to buy tickets if there isn’t an aggressive ad campaign. Relying on word of mouth for a so-so film with unknown actors isn’t the way to break the box office.
