Oh really? Oof.
IMO Doom 2016 was fine with its plot sorely for how amazing the Doom Slayer is. He doesn't speak, just does what HE believes works. They nailed it so well. Eternal did go a little...much with its story, at times I forgot about it. A few story beats worked but it's only when the Slayer is the focus. The level where you get the BFG had some great story beats but it's only because it's the Slayer not giving a fuck and how known he is by the UAC. I'd add the level with the Night Sentinels too for backstory and partially the one where you get the Crucible but it was such a pain in the ass. Other beats, ehh nah it was much. Points for trying. That was something that turned me off 2016 and I heard Eternal went even harder with it. Doom is supposed to be dumb shooter fun. There was a wafer thin plot and that was all you needed. Doom 3 did it better.
I don't know much about Eternal, but having the Slayer have this giant backstory feels so anti Doom. He's just supposed to be a regular guy. He's Guts with guns.IMO Doom 2016 was fine with its plot sorely for how amazing the Doom Slayer is. He doesn't speak, just does what HE believes works. They nailed it so well.
